Peoples Democratic Party chieftain and philanthropist, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar has called for adequate protection of women against defilement and other forms of violence.
Former Vice President and presidential candidate in the 2019 general election, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar has joined the host of other concerned Nigerians to condemn sexual violations of the female gender.
The Peoples Democratic Party chieftain and philanthropist called for adequate protection of women against defilement and other forms of violence.
Naija News understands that Atiku made the submission while reacting to the recent killing of a 100-level Microbiology student of the University of Benin, UNIBEN, who was reportedly ganged raped and mutilated by yet to be identified faces.
It could be recalled that Uwaila V era Omozuwa was reportedly raped while studying inside a Redeemed Christian Church of God, RCCG, in Benin, the capital city of Edo State.
Condemning the incident and other violence act on the female gender in Nigeria, Atiku called for a review of rape laws According to him, doing so will ensure that perpetrators of the unlawful act are brought to justice.
His tweet reads; “I just spoke to the family of the late Uwa Omozuwa. I expressed my deepest condolences over her rape and murder. I feel their anguish. Sadly, rape is now a pandemic in our country.
“It is time we reviewed the laws on rape to ensure that there are no escape routes in the investigation, prosecution, conviction and adequate punishment for this heinous crime.”
Meanwhile, the prosecution of the alleged Taraba Kidnap ,Bala Hamisu [aka wadume] has beeen taken over by the office of the Attorney-General of the Federation,[AGF].
This was confirmed on Wednesday at the resumed hearing of the case by Mr Shuaibu Labaran, a lawyer from the Ministry of Justice.
