THE SPANISH FLU

Coronavirus (COVID-19) | WHO | Regional Office for Africa COVID-19: LESSON FROM HISTORY

The Spanish Flu (1918):

-- Lasted 2 years (Jan. 1918 to Dec. 1920 in two waves (three in Africa);
-- Infected +-500 million worldwide;
-- Killed +-50 million worldwide;
--The first wave killed just about 3 million;
-- Restrictions were relaxed and the second wave came;
-- The second wave did the real damage. Wiped out close to 50 million (est);

-- Nigeria escaped the first wave but was caught in the second wave as the virus arrived by sea in Sept. 1918;

-- Nigeria's population then was +-18 million and between 50-80% of the population were infected;
+-500,000 Nigerians were killed;
--Sadly, many people doubted the virus during the first wave and didn't take it as serious.

We are seeing the same in Nigeria in 2020 concerning Covid-19;
-- Lockdown and quarantine efforts were prematurely relaxed in 1918 perhaps due to the war and people's agitation.
We are seeing agitations in 2020 in Nigeria concerning Covid-19;

--The colonial gov't was probably more responsible than the current gov'ts (Fed. States, Local) in Nigeria, yet so many Nigerians died in 1918;

-- In pandemics such as the one in 1918 and the current Covid-19, body count becomes uncontrollable when the rate of infection escalates and medical resources become overwhelmed;

-- We are beginning to see such escalation now as Covid-19 penetrates deeper into communities and community acquired infections increase;

-- The threat of hunger is real, but to relax restrictions when the rate of infection is ascending instead of receding portends greater danger;

-- Nigerians are advised to learn from history, self regulate and comply with Preventive Instructions to avoid unimaginable Covid-19 casualties;

-- If 500,000 died when the population was 18 million, what can happen with a population of 200 million is better left to be imagined especially with gov'ts that are prone to embezzlement rather than deploy all resources to fight the pandemic

-- Covid-19 is real.
Stay home. Stay safe.

Their 12-year marriage was officially dissolved this week after a court  granted a decree, according to Mail Online. The former couple split in January 2018 before their   union legally came to an end during a 30-second hearing in October 2018. During the hearing, Ant had to technically admit adultery with his former PA and girlfriend, Anne-Marie as their romance began while he and Lisa were still married. A source told The Sun: 'It's been an extremely difficult road with a lot of heartache and unpleasantness, but it's finally done. It's over. 'Ant's been desperate to start the next chapter of his life and at least now he and Anne-Marie can plan for the future. It won't be long before they are married.'  It was recently reported that An...

The Bundesliga could return by "the middle or end of May", Germany's sports ministers have said, as the league awaits the go-ahead from Angela Merkel's government to resume the season.

The ministers of sports in Germany's 16 states met Monday and announced in a statement that it is "justifiable" for the league to resume "in empty stadiums" from "the middle or end of May". "The German Football League must create and enforce the strictest hygienic and medical conditions, and monitor them with appropriate measures," added the statement. German Chancellor Merkel will meet state leaders in Berlin on Thursday, when it is hoped the Bundesliga will get the green light to resume. All football in Germany ground to a halt in mid March due to the coronavirus pandemic. Last week, the German Football League (DFL) announced it is ready to resume from May 9, albeit behind closed doors with tight hygiene measures and players tested regularly. A return in May would make the Bundesliga the first top league in Europe to resume as Germany cautiously eases lockdown measures. Key politicians, including health minister Jens Spahn, ha...

COVID-19: Nigeria To Get US Ventilators In Two Weeks

Nigeria is set to take delivery of the ventilators promised by American President,  Donald Trump  by the middle of June. However, the delivery time could still be affected by production and shipping times,  Naija News  understands. It would be recalled that the American President had on April 28 during a phone  conversation  with his Nigerian counterpart,  Muhammadu Buhari  promised to send 250 ventilators to Nigeria to support the fight against COVID-19. However, Nigeria’s Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed  while speaking  at the presidential task force briefing on the 28th of May, said the ventilators are yet to arrive in Nigeria. According to him, there is no specific date for the arrival of the medical items, and that the information will be made public once the ventilators are received. But the US Embassy in Nigeria on Monday confirmed that the ventilators are expected to arrive by the middle of June. The mission gave the date i...
